Architecture isn’t just about creating shelters to survive, in fact that’s not even the principal purpose of architecture. Architecture has the purposes of establishing place, creating a humanized safe area in a dangerous world, expressing social identity, indicating status and of course, making shelters for people to live in. Architects must know that buildings are more than just material objects and structures, buildings are institutions. On the other hand, urban planners must make places. Urban planning involves the design of buildings, groups of buildings, spaces and landscapes. Although their interest must be in more than a single building. Of course there are places so badly designed and that’s because some of them are designed by someone who’s not trained, or maybe it is but “being trained doesn´t mean that the person responsible for the development will design some successful place”.
